About Beronia Gran Reserva
We know that your wine collection is full of great red wines. We don’t doubt it for a second. But make sure there is a bottle of Beronia Gran Reserva in your collection. According to the winery, owned by Gonzalez-Byass, Beronia Gran Reserva “is an uncontested wine”, a must-have that everyone who loves a good drink should enjoy. And we would agree!
Beronia Gran Reserva is a timeless classic that comes from selected old vineyards in La Rioja Alta. This is one of the most special wines that should absolutely have a place at your table. You can’t go wrong with it. Beronia Gran Reserva is grown in the D.O. Ca La Rioja, at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria on an amalgam of soils with a mix of clay, lime and pebbles. The proximity to the Ebro River also influences ripening, with winds coming directly from the water, delaying ripening and increasing the acidity of the berries. In total there are about 900 hectares of vineyards where more than 200 winegrowers collaborate with the winery. They are all under the direction of Matías Calleja, Beronia’s winemaker and technical director.
In general, Beronia Gran Reserva has a very special, unique and unmistakable style, which depends on several factors. The first of these is its winemaking process (where only the best Tempranillo and Graciano grapes are used), fermentation (which is carried out slowly), the periodic pumping over (where aromas and flavours are extracted) and the facilities (built semi-buried to take advantage of the plot’s natural slope). As well as this, Beronia Gran Reserva is aged in mixed oak barrels made from American and French oak, where Beronia Gran Reserva will rest for a long period of time. While American wood is harder and has larger pores (facilitating the transfer of properties), French wood is finer, providing qualities in a more leisurely manner and smoother flavours. Initially, when Matías Calleja asked the cooper for this combination, they were taken for madmen; however, it is now more than proven that thanks to this very factor, Beronia Gran Reserva finds the perfect balance. Don’t let it pass you by!
