Tasting notes Bass Phillip Nebbiolo 2019

Red wine Aged in wood Biodynamic and Vegan.

As a good single-variety Australian Nebbiolo, Bass Phillip Nebbiolo 2019 is a red with great acidity. This is not to say that it is difficult to drink, far from it, as it is a tremendously delicious wine. Deep purple in colour, this is a concentrated wine with floral notes. The palate remains dry, with silky tannins and hints of oak. Red fruits, earth and a spicy touch. Long and satisfying finish.

About Bass Phillip Nebbiolo

Just the sound of the word makes you think “Italian”: Nebbiolo. Knowing that this red variety, the basis for Barolo and Barbaresco wines, was born in northern Italy is a basic concept that every wine student and apprentice should know; one of those things you learn in your first tasting course. But what happens if we suddenly link Nebbiolo to Australia? Does that change everything you thought you knew? Is that even possible? It definitely is! Here is Bass Phillip Nebbiolo, a single-variety Nebbiolo made in Australia.

Okay. Knowing that Nebbiolo is typical of northern Italy is a basic concept that you learn on day one. But Bass Phillip Nebbiolo is a wine to take notes on and become an expert on viticulture and varieties. You might even win a prize. In principle, it should be noted that it is very rare to see this variety in Australia, mainly due to the strong control and protection the Nebbiolo has. This variety, which has a reputation for being difficult to grow, is very sensitive to both the soil and the climate of the place it grows in. Some producers, both in South Africa and Australia, have happily jumped into cultivation. And it is not easy, although the grape seems to have adapted perfectly to the deep, mineral-rich soils of South Gippsland in Victoria, in the south of the island, where head winemaker Jean-Marie Fourrier has managed to understand it.

Low yields are the key to Bass Philip’s vinifications. And when we say low, they are incredibly small: all the grapes from a single vineyard are barely enough for half a bottle. Likewise, in the vineyard, intervention is always minimal, without using any chemical products. During the rest of the journey, Bass Phillip Nebbiolo ferments spontaneously from natural yeasts and is vinified with total care, without interfering too much during the process. At the time of bottling, it is neither filtered nor clarified. 100% biodynamic and natural.

So keep an eye on the information and add the name Bass Phillip Nebbiolo to your sommelier notes. A red wine not to be tricked about.
