About Barrat Masson Grain d'Argile Extra Brut

For a couple to get along well, among other things, it is important that they have common interests and are willing to share their experiences together. In the case of winegrower Löic Barrat and winemaker Aurelie Masson, their common ground was easy to find. Their love for vineyards and wine is mutual. It all started when Löic decided to stop selling his grapes to the cooperative and start making his own wines with Aurelie under the Barrat Masson brand. Working from the restored family estate in the village of Villenauxe-la-Grande, in Champagne, they make wines with minimal intervention, without clarifying or filtering, and all their sparkling wines are disgorged by hand using the traditional “a la volée” method.

Barrat Masson Grain d'Argile Extra Brut is a champagne made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes from a 40-year-old vineyard planted on clay-limestone soil. Their work is organic and the harvest is carried out manually at the optimum point of ripeness. Then, in the winery, the base wine is made in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts and, with malolactic fermentation partially completed, it is aged for 9 months on its lees in old barrels. The second fermentation takes place in the bottle and the wine is aged for 30 months on the lees, with manual disgorgement and a dosage of 2 grams per litre.

As a result, the partnership between Löic and Aurelie has managed to achieve a very precise wine. Barrat Masson Grain d'Argile Extra Brut is a lovely champagne that perfectly combines the fruitiness of Pinot with the freshness of Chardonnay. The perfect fusion.
