Known as the "enfant terrible" of Madeira wines, Ricardo Diogo Vasconcelos Freitas disrupted the island's tradition like no one before. His revolution was not limited to the bold decision to cease exporting bulk wine, as his parents and grandparents had done; he was also the first to forgo added sugar, breaking a tradition that no other winery in Madeira had dared to challenge.

Was he mad, courageous, or visionary? Probably a bit of all three. And thanks to this blend of audacity and passion, Barbeito not only survived but today stands as one of the great Madeira wine producers, with an international reputation that marries history, quality, and personality.

An example of this expertise is Barbeito 20 Years Old Verdelho Ribeiro Real Ed. 2. A fortified wine whose Ribeiro Real vineyards are located in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, on the southern face of Madeira, about 200 metres above sea level, capturing the island's energy in every cluster.

Made from the verdelho and tinta negra grape varieties, the must of the former is obtained through continuous pressing and the latter through traditional treading. Fermentation is halted at the desired level of sweetness by the addition of wine alcohol (96%), creating a perfect balance of freshness, fruit, and complexity.
