About Antoniolo Erbaluce di Caluso
Apart from excellent red wines, Piedmont also makes wonderful white wines!
Since 1967 this area of northern Italy has been named the D.O.C.G. Erbaluce di Caluso, where you can find pale-coloured white wines. Standing out from all the producers that make this type of wine, is Antoniolo Societá Agricola, a winery in Gattinara. Mario Antoniolo arrived in this village in the province of Vercelli in the 1940s. At that time, when everyone was more concerned with quantity over quality, Mario was one of the first to differentiate terroirs and always have quality in mind. So, Antoniolo Societá Agricola started work on the vineyards of the 15th century monastery he bought.
Today, the story of this family business continues, but now the chapters are written by Lorella and Alberto, grandchildren and third generation of the family, who are still in charge of production. At the moment, Antonio lo Societá Agricola has 14 hectares of volcanic soil that are the birthplace of all the Antoniolo Erbaluce di Caluso wines.
Antoniolo Erbaluce di Caluso takes its name from the Erbaluce, a grape native to the area. According to legend, the fairy Albaluce gave the inhabitants of Caluso this grape (also known as Bianchera, Bian Robusti or Uva Rustia). These grapes are grown using non-invasive and completely natural methods and fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. Antoniolo Erbaluce di Caluso is aged for five months in the same tanks.
