About Antoine Sanzay Saumur-Champigny La Paterne
In 1957, a hundred winegrowers from the Valle del Loira came together to establish the Syndicat des producteurs de Saumur-Champigny. This region, nestled between the Loire, the Thouet, and the Fontevraud forest in northwestern France, became an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (A.O.C), which today encompasses 1,600 hectares of vineyards across the villages of Chacé, Montsoreau, Parnay, Saumur, Souzay-Champigny, Turquant, Varrains, Dampierre-sur-Loire, and Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg.
From this latter location, Antoine Sanzay crafts wines, positioning himself as one of the most promising winemakers in the region. His journey began in 1999 when he took charge of the family's 11 hectares. Until then, the entire production was sold to the local cooperative; however, everything changed in 2013 when Antoine Sanzay decided to venture into independent winemaking. For his wines, this vigneron relies on cabernet franc, an indigenous grape variety that thrives on the area's soft, white soils, dominated by tuffeau (porous limestone), which in this locale becomes more yellow and sandy, lending itself to lighter wines. In this respect, the reds of the A.O.C. Saumur-Champigny deserve special mention, as they manage to unveil the most fragrant and refreshing expression of cabernet franc.
In the case of Antoine Sanzay Saumur-Champigny La Paterne, the grapes hail from four hectares of vineyards located in Varrains, Chacé, and St-Cyr-en-Bourg. The vines, planted in 1985, grow at an altitude of 80 metres and are cultivated organically. Occasionally, the plants must endure cool winters (with frosts) and hot, dry summers. The harvest, conducted over a week in mid-September, is done manually, in small boxes, with the clusters carefully selected before processing.
Upon arrival at the winery, Antoine Sanzay Saumur-Champigny La Paterne is destemmed and transferred to concrete vats, where it undergoes fermentation with native yeasts. In this process, free from any additives, only a small amount of sulphite is added to protect the wine and endure the 30-day maceration period it will undergo. After this time, Antoine Sanzay Saumur-Champigny La Paterne will mature for nine months in concrete tanks. And nothing more. Antoine Sanzay Saumur-Champigny La Paterne will be bottled unfiltered and unfined, revealing the most brilliant aspect of this variety.

2020 | Antoine Sanzay Saumur-Champigny La Paterne 2020 unfurls a youthful allure with nuanced spicy undertones that caress the palate. On the nose, it greets us with an invigorating medley of red fruits such as cherries and raspberries, interwoven with a delicate whisper of black pepper. 2019 | Antoine Sanzay Saumur-Champigny La Paterne 2019 is a smooth red, the result of an excellent year. The spring frosts (where 40% of the harvest was lost) almost ruined this wine that is lively on the nose with fruity aromas. On the palate, you can feel the hours of sunshine and the heat of the remaining months, with bloody notes on the palate. There are also rich and velvety tannins. Dense and energetic. Slightly astringent. Fresh finish. |
