About Alvear Pedro Ximénez 1927

Alvear Pedro Ximénez 1927 is a sweet wine made of 100% Pedro Ximénez grapes from the D.O. Montilla-Moriles, made of sun-dried grapes and aged for 5 years in American oak barrels, by means of the traditional solera system (a process of ageing liquids), with regular extractions and sprinklings.

Bodegas Alvear, founded in 1729, is the oldest winery in Andalusia and the second in Spain. Throughout its history, it has kept its family personality, true to its roots. The Alvear are quite a few nowadays, and there are more than 50 owners right now. Some of the people in charge of the company are also family members.

At Bodegas Alvear the main grape variety is the Pedro Ximénez, which is the base of its sweet, fino, oloroso and amontillado wines. It is the queen white variety of D.O. Montilla-Moriles, and also of the vineyards and wines of Alvear.

The vineyards are generally cultivated on highly calcareous soils. In this area there are two kinds: the "albarizas or alberos", very calcareous and permeable soils, poor in organic matter and not so productive, where they produce grapes with a longer and balanced ripening; and the "ruedos", reddish soils thanks to the presence of iron salts, which make them ripen earlier.
