About Alfred Merkelbach Gutriesling Trocken

The brothers Alfred and Rolf Merkelbach are legends. Alive, yes; yet legends nonetheless. A visit to their vineyards, in the heart of the Mosel, is akin to a journey back in time, where the most traditional winemaking methods remain as relevant as ever. They primarily work on their small plot (barely a hectare), but this hasn't stopped them from becoming a true cult winery. The productions are very small and limited, and acquiring one is a genuine achievement. If you manage to do so (hallelujah!), we recommend that one of them be Alfred Merkelbach Gutriesling Trocken.
 
Alfred Merkelbach Gutriesling Trocken is a dry and brilliant Riesling, fermented in large foudres. Cultivated among the Ürziger Würzgarten, Erdener Treppchen, and Kinheimer Rosenberg vineyards, this white is one of the most intriguing wines from these brothers. And they know exactly what they're doing. It was Alfred who, at just 14 years old, took charge of the family vineyards; followed by Rolf. Since then, they have spent 70 years working together, mastering the land and each of its vines, where trial and error has been their best guide. As the saying goes: the devil knows more from being old than from being the devil.
 
In the mid-20th century, the technification and modernization of German wineries arrived like a giant, sweeping everything away. However, they survived. And today they continue to do so. Although neither of them has children, the future of Alfred Merkelbach is secured with the Selbach family, trusted friends who will take charge of their wines when they are no longer around (without losing the essence of each one).
