About Château Saint-Pierre

In 1855 Napoleon III ordered the wine regions to classify their wines. This request was not just a whim. The aim was to establish an order for the Universal Exhibition of 1855, where the wines of Gironde would be presented. This included the sweet white wines from Sauternes, a single cru red from Graves and a large number of reds from Médoc (where the main denominations of origin were represented in five Grands Crus Classés). Within this group is the A.O.C. Saint-Julien who managed to sneak into the Quatriémes Crus with their wines, of which Château Saint-Pierre stands out.

Château Saint-Pierre is a reference. A classic among classics. A must that all wine lovers need to try. Château Saint-Pierre is a red wine made at the winery of the same name in the Médoc, specifically in the A.O.C. Saint-Julien, in Bordeaux (southwest France). Château Saint-Pierre is the flagship of this house, one of the most renowned of the denomination, founded in the 17th century and reunited by Henri Martin in the late 1980s. Throughout history this estate, considered one of the oldest in the area, has been modified and divided when various inheritances have been passed on; but finally, and with plenty of luck and astuteness, Martin managed to bring it back together.

Currently, the A.O.C. Saint-Julien is one of the smallest in the area, so its terroir is practically uniform across the whole area. In the case of Château Saint-Pierre, the vineyards, with an average age of 50 years old, spread over 17 hectares growing on sandy clay and gravel soils. These crops are supervised daily by a team of 45 men and women. This team grows during the harvest, which is carried out manually, with more than 150 workers who also participate in the selection of the best bunches (using vibrating tables with optical sorting technology).

In the winery, which has been restructured and equipped with the latest technology, Château Saint-Pierre ferments in the traditional manner in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with an automatic pumping-over system. Once it has been made into wine, Château Saint-Pierre is transferred to one of the house’s 2,000 barrels, where it will spend 14 to 16 months resting. After this, Château Saint-Pierre is ready to continue making history.
