About Château Lagrange

Of the seven sub-regions in the Médoc, the AOC Saint-Julien is renowned for its many châteaux that produce impressive wines year after year. One of these is Château Lagrange, a historic estate characterised by the impressive Tuscan tower that dominates the estate and symbolises the life and culture that this property has seen.

Named “Villa Rustica” in Roman times, in the Middle Ages it became “La Grangia”. This is when the Templars turned it into a place of worship and planted the first vines. In the 16th century it became the property of nobleman Lagrange Monteil, who gave it the name it has today. But it was not until the 18th century that wine began to be produced, first by the Branne family and then by Jean Valère Cabarrus, who built the famous Tuscan tower in 1820. However, for many years, Château Lagrange was seen as a tired, underperforming St Julien Château that was not worthy of its 3ème Cru Classé status. In 1983 things changed. The estate was acquired by Japanese group Suntory and, thanks to a significant investment, Lagrange soon became a model Bordeaux wine estate that others looked up to.

This hard work from the new owners at Château Lagrange saw it regain its pride and position. This wine is made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot vines planted in incredible gravel, sand and clay soils with a high iron content. The work in the vineyard is respectful and meticulous and in the winery, the wine is made by plot. Once fermentation has finished, the wine is aged for 21 months in French oak barrels. The result is a powerful wine, worthy of its status as a great product of Saint-Julien.
