Château Couhins 2022 is a concentrated red wine with deep aromas of black fruit, accompanied by notes of lilac and hints of spices and undergrowth. On the palate, it is ample, fleshy, and elegant. A medium to full-bodied wine with velvety tannins, a vibrant core of fruit, and a long, fruity finish.

About Château Couhins

In 1962, after the death of Edouard Gasqueton, Château Couhins faced serious economic problems. The disappearance of its owner only worsened a situation that had already been ongoing, where the frosts of 1956 and the heatwaves of 1959 and 1961 had put this vineyard in the AOC Pessac-Léognan in jeopardy. These 60 hectares, where there were barely any vineyards left, were on the brink of disappearing if it weren't for the National Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Research (INRA) which bought it in the late 1960s. Since then, Château Couhins has become a key and emblematic place where - thanks to experiments and trials - great advances in Bordeaux vineyards are made.

In the area, there are mainly three types of soil: a top layer of pebbles, a second layer of limestone, and a layer of sand. These three layers mix, resting on a deeper sub-layer of clay, which has the main function of storing water from precipitation. This function is particularly useful during the ripening stage where, due to climate change, temperatures have risen. Thus, with their roots deeply embedded, the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot vines can find the necessary relief in the clays during those months.

Château Couhins carries out both alcoholic fermentation and malolactic fermentation. The first one takes place in stainless steel tanks, while the second one occurs in wood. Prior to this process, Château Couhins benefits from extensive work in the vineyard, where the grapes are harvested manually and meticulously selected. As if that weren't enough, the grape clusters of Château Couhins also undergo density sorting, which allows separating each harvest grain by grain. In the winery, all movements are carried out by gravity. Finally, Château Couhins will rest for a year in both stainless steel tanks and barrels, amphoras, or casks (depending on the vintage). This variety of materials will allow each variety to develop and showcase its full potential.
