Akutain Crianza 2020 is a red wine that invites you to explore its vibrant and authentic character. Bringing the glass closer reveals an aromatic array dominated by notes of raspberry and cherry, complemented by subtle hints of tobacco and vanilla, a result of its meticulous ageing in American oak. On the palate, it surprises with its well-defined structure, smooth tannins, and a refreshing acidity that maintains impeccable balance. The year 2020 allowed the grapes to mature under optimal conditions, resulting in a wine brimming with energy and elegance. About Akutain Crianza

When we speak of an old-school wine, we do not imply anything outdated, nor a dusty label. We refer to a style born with patience, matured with respect, and never rushed. A wine crafted as in the past: with hands, with time, and with thought.

In Rioja, this signifies traditional cultivation, vineyards tended without shortcuts, natural fermentations, and barrels that have seen more vintages than many sommeliers on TikTok. And if there is a name that remains true to this philosophy, it is Akutain.

Located in Haro, the historical capital of Rioja wine, Jon Peñagaricano continues the family legacy with a project that proudly bears his father's second surname. At Akutain, nothing is contrived: wine is made here because there is a belief in it, not because novelty is sought.

Akutain Crianza is a textbook red for those who wish to understand what Rioja means when taken seriously. Predominantly tempranillo, with a small touch of garnacha and viura (yes, it is blended with a white variety, as was done in the past), it ferments with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and fiberglass tanks for about 10 days.

Afterwards, it spends 14 to 16 months in used oak barrels, where the wine refines without losing freshness. And as all good things require their pause, it stabilizes for at least 8 months in the bottle before being released to the world.

This is how Akutain Crianza is presented to us. A red wine with moderate alcohol, natural balance, and that subtle yet profound character that only those who know how to wait can achieve. Red fruit, spices, wood that accompanies without dominating, and a final sensation that says: “this is Rioja, but of the finest kind.”
