About Mathilde Chapoutier Duché d'Uzès
Being someone’s child gives you access that other people don’t have. However, from the very beginning you are in the eye of the storm and, let’s be honest, comparisons with your parents never help. So if you have Michel Chapoutier as your father, named by Robert Parker himself as the king of Rhône wines, earing respect in your own right can’t be easy. But if there is one thing Mathilde has been clear about, as well as continuing with the family business as head of business development and strategy for M. Chapoutier, it is that she wants to create her own brand that matches her daring personality. This is how Mathilde Chapoutier Sélection began in 2015, her very own project based on the search for the best plots around the world to create excellent wines.
One of the wines she has been making during this time, Mathilde Chapoutier Duché d'Uzès, is a red wine made from the Syrah and Garnacha Tinta varieties. These vines are planted on the Cévennes slopes (France) on clay-limestone soil within the AOC Duché d'Uzès, an denomination that was created in 2013 and is located in the extreme southwest of the Rhône Valley. Traditional agriculture is practiced and, once the grapes reach phenolic maturity, they are harvested by machine. In the winery, the grapes are selected and destemmed and then vinified in concrete tanks for 3 weeks, with staggered daily pumping over. Under Mathilde’s supervision, at the end of alcoholic fermentation, the temperature is raised to 30-33°C to promote tannin refinement. Finally the wine ages for 6 months in concrete tanks.
Under the critical eye of a demanding audience, with her father right at the front, Mathilde Chapoutier has managed to make the most of her name by making straightforward wines. Mathilde Chapoutier Duché d'Uzès is a casual, easy-drinking red wine that will leave you wanting to venture into the AOC Duché d'Uzès.
| 2021 |
Mathilde Chapoutier Duché d'Uzès 2021 is a smooth red wine with delicious aromas of red fruit accompanied by notes of violets and hints of spice. On the palate it is broad, smooth and balanced. A medium-bodied wine with velvety tannins, a sweet mid-palate and a long finish with notes of roasted coffee. |
