About Dominio D´Echauz Clarete
The story of Noah's Ark is one that resonates with all of us. It is found in the Bible, within Genesis, and recounts how Noah built a vast vessel to preserve life from the great flood. Onboard were not only his family and pairs of animals but also the notion of a fresh start. Although it may sound like an ancient tale, the idea of preserving what is important to prevent it from being lost remains very much alive. This is true in the world of wine as well.
In the northeasternmost part of the Ribera del Duero, at nearly 1,000 metres above sea level, there is a project that perfectly embodies this philosophy: Dominio d’Echauz. Here, it is not about saving animals but something far more subtle: the diversity of the vine.
Dominio d’Echauz is not your typical winery. It is a family initiative with a strong scientific foundation, born from years of research. Its objective goes beyond wine production. It seeks to protect a heritage that has been gradually disappearing over decades, that of Spain's ancestral vine varieties and biotypes.
In fact, as aptly described by its own founder, Rafael García, the project functions as a genuine "viticultural Noah's Ark." In its vineyards, the world's largest collection of vine biotypes is preserved. Over 16,000, including clones, massal selections, and varieties recovered from different regions of the country.
The domain spans 787 hectares, with about 130 hectares of vineyards distributed across three sites—Val d’Echauz, Izaldea, and Las Vilaneras. Clay-iron soils, gravel, sands, and an altitude nearing 1,000 metres define the character of wines that are fresh, elegant, and full of tension.
What is intriguing is that this work extends beyond theory. Here, conservation is also something that can be tasted.
A prime example is Dominio d’Echauz Clarete. Crafted from garnachas sourced from ancestral biotypes recovered in 72 villages of the Ribera del Duero, it is a modern reinterpretation of a historic style. After 4 months in French oak barrels, the result is a wine that is fresh, characterful, and deeply connected to its territory.
In essence, Dominio d’Echauz is about looking to the past to build the future. A project that demonstrates that wine is crafted not only in the winery but also in the memory. And as evidence, Dominio D’Echauz Clarete.
