About Avignonesi Grifi Toscana

Have you ever encountered a creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle? This is a griffin (also known as griffon or gryphon in some cultures), a mythological figure that has captivated generations with its remarkable blend of powers and symbolism. The griffin combines the majesty of the lion, a symbol of strength and royalty, with the sharpness of the eagle, which represents vigilance and higher vision. This combination makes the griffin an emblem of power and wisdom. Inspired by this formidable figure, the prestigious Tuscan winery Avignonesi decided in 1983 to launch a wine called "Grifi," showcasing the ability of the sangiovese grape to blend with other varieties. However, production of "Grifi" ceased in 1996 when the winery chose to follow the trend of not blending the region's premier variety. Fortunately, in 2009, with the arrival of new owner Virginie Saverys, a wine enthusiast from Belgium, "Grifi" was reintroduced. Under her leadership, not only has the legacy of this iconic wine been revived, but Avignonesi has also been transformed into the largest biodynamic winery in Italy, highlighting its commitment to sustainable production.

Made from the sangiovese and cabernet sauvignon varieties, Avignonesi Grifi Toscana originates from parcels located in Cortona and Montepulciano. It is crafted using biodynamic practices, including the preparation of organic composts and synchronising viticultural activities with lunar and planetary cycles. The harvest is done manually at the optimal moment of ripeness, and once in the winery, each variety is vinified separately with skin maceration in stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts from the winery's pied de cuve. Finally, the wine undergoes aging for a minimum of 18 months in oak barrels.

Like the mythical griffin, the legend of Avignonesi Grifi Toscana endures. A historic wine born from the union of two very different personalities (sangiovese and cabernet sauvignon), offering us power, nobility, and distinction.


 

2021

Avignonesi Grifi Toscana 2021 is a dark ruby-red wine with violet highlights. On the nose, it reveals aromas of blueberries, blackberries, and incense, followed by hints of graphite and vanilla. On the palate, it is dense and expansive, with flavours of plums and blueberries that evolve into a balsamic and spicy explosion, supported by good acidity. The tannins, vibrant throughout the palate, accompany its spicy and persistent finish.
