About Siflogo Keropatis
Professor, poet, but above all a lover of his homeland, Dionysis Papanikolopoulos epitomises passion. A staunch advocate for heritage, culture, and local history, he devoted the majority of his life to imparting this knowledge to his students. Now, he seeks to preserve this legacy through the creation of his own wines. Thus, Siflogo was born, a small venture that began with his wife Maria in the picturesque mountain village of Platistoma, in Lefkas, Ionian Islands (Greece) and today, his son Vasilis continues with the same enthusiasm and dedication. Although their annual production is limited to a select number of bottles, they offer us pure wine, difficult to compare.
It is with this obsession to recover and preserve the local heritage that they present Siflogo Keropatis, a wine that pays homage to the ancient winemaking practices of Lefkada. This wine takes its name from "Keropatis," as locals referred to the lighter reds, derived from shorter macerations. Made with the island's most prominent grape: vertzami, Siflogo Keropatis comes from 40-year-old vines situated at 500 metres altitude, on dry, poor, rocky limestone soils, without the intervention of chemical fertilisers or pesticides. The farming is carried out entirely by hand, with the occasional use of plant-based fertilisers, blue stone, and sulphur, and once in the winery, the grapes undergo a pre-fermentation maceration and a spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks with gentle temperature control. Finally, the wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined, without the addition of sulphites or additives.
In each bottle of Siflogo Keropatis, the Papanikolopoulos family offers a living testament to their love for the land that gave them birth. And so, as Dionysis did for so many years with his students, the Siflogo project continues to teach, convey, and honour the heritage of Lefkada, ensuring that the flame of passion for the land never extinguishes.
