About Roagna Barolo DOCG Riserva La Pira
The wines from the D.O.C.G. Barolo never fail to astonish. Yet, Roagna Barolo DOCG Riserva La Pira is simply otherworldly! A wine not suitable for every palate (only the most discerning ones).
Wholly captivating, Roagna Barolo DOCG Riserva La Pira is arguably one of the finest wines one can discover. And from whence does it derive its remarkable qualities? Primarily from Pira, the historic vineyard located in Castiglione Falletto (within Barolo, Northern Italy) - where the Nebbiolo used in crafting this red wine is cultivated. Facing southeast, the seven hectares of this estate were acquired by the Roagna in 1989. Since then, the family has expertly extracted the best from the marine-origin soils, rich in white rock, iron, sand, and both grey and blue marls. This blend, situated at the heart of the Barolo region, is ideal for producing robust, tannic wines, as the harvested grapes are well-suited for such a profile. The 25-year-old vines are capable of yielding small, concentrated clusters, yet with a potent tannic presence that allows the red wine to mature for an extended period in oak barrels.
Indeed, this is the case with Roagna Barolo DOCG Riserva La Pira, which undergoes over five years of aging in oak barrels. Prior to this stage, the lengthy macerations that are characteristic of this producer (ranging from 60 to 100 days), as well as the alcoholic fermentations initiated from pied de cuve, are essential. Roagna Barolo DOCG Riserva La Pira is a magnificent wine not suitable for just any occasion. Only the most special moments, shared with those who truly appreciate this gem, will be fitting to savor this red. Without a doubt, it stands as one of the most exceptional wines from all of Northern Italy.
2006 | Roagna Barolo DOCG Riserva La Pira 2006 presents a richly concentrated, deep garnet hue with crimson reflections, exuding a radiant and lustrous appearance. The bouquet immediately captivates with licorice, ash, and dried fruit aromas, complemented by floral notes, iron, tar, and a hint of mint. On the palate, it is velvety and well-structured, with exquisitely refined tannins. An exemplary choice for cellaring. |
