About Roagna Barbaresco Albesani

Not once, not twice, but up to six times are the bottles of Roagna Barbaresco Albesani checked before being released for sale!

By hand, in a completely artisanal manner, at least one member of the Roagna family oversees the condition of their wines, where only those that are fit and finest are able to pass the test. From the vineyard to the cellar, the Roagna family's attention is focused on ensuring that everything is executed flawlessly, interpreting and extracting the best from each of their grapevines. In this endeavor, they work alone, without the assistance of any oenologist or external consultant, relying solely on their family's experience.

In the hills of Langhe, in the north of Italy, one can find the origins of this story in the calcareous clay soils (intermixed with marls and bluish-gray sands). These are the foundations of Albesani, a vineyard with Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva, situated at the summit of the hill (right on the border with the town of Santo Stefano). Here, at an altitude of 240 meters, grow over fifty-year-old nebbiolo vines. The cultivation is completely organic, without fertilizers and without any irrigation, keeping the soil covered with grass and herbs. This not only benefits the richness of the ecosystem (allowing the presence of other insects and species that are beneficial for the vineyard) but also the root system (enabling the roots to penetrate deeply).

However, as important as the fieldwork is in the production of Roagna Barbaresco Albesani, the work in the cellar is even more crucial: from the selection to the crushing, and through to the bottling. The ultimate goal of these wineries is to showcase the character of the terroir. And this can only be achieved with a respectful and non-interventionist approach to winemaking. The grapes of Roagna Barbaresco Albesani are harvested only when they reach optimal maturity. The family's method for checking this involves examining the skin and the seeds, which must have a woody and crisp texture. When the time for harvest comes, Roagna Barbaresco Albesani is handpicked in 10 kg boxes, placing each bunch with utmost care. Once in the cellar, Roagna Barbaresco Albesani undergoes a second selection, is destemmed and crushed, leading to the maceration process. This step is crucial in the production of the wines from the D.O.C.G. Barbaresco, where the must is in contact with the skins for months. Following the technique of 'rastrel' or submerged cap (where the wooden vats are completely sealed and filled to the brim), Roagna Barbaresco Albesani undergoes an average of 60 to 100 days of maceration. This pales in comparison to the extensive aging that characterizes the Roagna winery. In total, the wines from this house spend an average of five years aging in oak barrels and concrete vats.

Finally, no fining or stabilization is necessary. Roagna Barbaresco Albesani has had more than enough time to mature into a great red wine from Northern Italy without any external aid.

2016

Roagna Barbaresco Albesani 2016 is a mature, tannic, and robust red wine, exuding a multifaceted fruitiness and complexity. The bouquet is pronounced, brimming with vibrant notes of blackberries, red currant, and roasted plums. On the palate, it is well-structured and expansive, with a substantial body. Flavours of blackberry leaf, leather, dark chocolate, liquorice, violet, and black tea emerge.
