About Ornellaia Masseto
A modern legend. This is how we might think of Ornellaia Masseto, a unique and very exclusive red wine, produced by the Frescobaldi family, in the D.O.C. Bolgheri Superiore.
To find out where it came from, you don't have to go very far back in time. It was only 40 years ago, in 1980, when Ludovico Antorini and winemaker André Tchelistcheff decided to plant Merlot vines on the slopes near the Tyrrhenian Sea (the part of the Mediterranean Sea west of the Italian peninsula between the islands of Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily and the coasts of Tuscany, Lazio, Campania and Calabria).
Until then, the only wines produced in the area were the well-known Super Tuscans, wines made with Cabernet Sauvignon, which began to gain recognition in the 1960s. Planting other varieties had been unthinkable. But, against all odds, the results were good, with a well-ripened grape thanks to the sea breeze and the reflection of the sun on the sea, which reflected the sun’s rays like a mirror. The rest was down to the blue clay soil (similar to the soil in Pomerol), with marine sediments and shells. All of these things result in very exclusive, unique and inimitable wines, like Ornellaia Masseto.
The finishing touch to this wine happens in the winery, with a very measured and careful production process: double grape selection, very gentle pressing, fermentation in steel tanks (at 25ºC-28ºC for 25 days) and maceration. The process finishes with two years of aging in two stages: firstly, the wine ages separately for one year; then after blending, it spends twelve more months in barrels.
2019 | Ornellaia Masseto 2019 is a red wine that reveals itself with reticence, gradually unfurling to express its full magnitude, and upon doing so, it unveils an exceptional embodiment of the Merlot grape. This red wine beguiles with an enthralling array of both red and black fruits that envelop the palate with refined strength and a precise acidity that harmonizes the composition. An exquisite, enigmatic, and mysterious red, it astonishes with each sip. |

2017 | Ornellaia Masseto 2017 is a red wine made with Chardonnay (100%). On the nose it is very rich, with notes of black fruits, spices and liquorice. On the palate it is intense, balanced, elegant, creamy and velvety, with a long finish. |
