About Manin Las Olvidadas del Oeste
They say that great discoveries are born from the unexpected. This was the case for Sancho Rodríguez and Ángela Zozaya, the driving forces behind Manin y sus Muchachos, when they discovered century-old garnacha vineyards clinging to the steep slopes of the Sonsierra Navarra—terraces impossible to mechanise—that had been left untouched by any land reform. These "semi-wild treasures" survived abandonment and now thrive in a project that, far from seeking shelter in official denominations, champions the freedom of organic "table wine."
It is uncommon for someone to step out from the shadow of a surname as renowned as Telmo Rodríguez, a pioneer in Rioja, to embark on a parallel journey. Nevertheless, Sancho chose to recover small forgotten plots, convinced that the true essence of Navarrese garnacha resided there. Together with Ángela, they transformed their passion into four hectares spread across three valleys, all farmed organically and with a steadfast commitment to low-impact practices.
Specifically, their Manin Las Olvidadas del Oeste originates from four plots at nearly 700 m in altitude, where the garnacha vines have thrived for decades without irrigation or industrial fertilisers. These are living remnants of a domestic viticulture that progress sought to erase. Each cluster is hand-harvested at the peak of ripeness and, once in the winery, macerates with whole grapes for 12 days to preserve the purity of the fruit. The next step is a combined ageing process in 225 L barrels and 54 L demijohns, which imparts structure while maintaining the original character intact.
The result is a serious and profound wine, with the spicy spark and wild touch only possible in old garnachas. Manin Las Olvidadas del Oeste celebrates patience, a love for the land, and the courage required to rescue what many considered lost. From the forgotten... to the unforgettable.
