About Esporão Private Selection Tinto
The best of the best. No more and no less. Just as good traditions must be maintained, the Esporão winery has been making Esporão Private Selection Red since 1987, a wine made only from this Portuguese winery’s best plots, within the D.O.C. Alentejo.
Under the original name of Garrafeia, this red wine was produced from the best barrels of Esporão Reserva. The production of this work of art is still going, now with a selection of the very best vineyards at Herdade do Esporão, the estate that this winery cultivates in the heart of the Alentejo (southern Portugal). Here, where there is a great variety of soils, they are faithful defenders of artisan work, where you have to learn to enjoy the moment. At Herdade do Esporão, time seems to stand still among its 460 hectares of vineyards that are divided into several plots with their own identity. In the case of Esporão Private Selection Tinto, made from Alicante Bouschet, Aragónez and Touriga Franca, the varieties come from four different vineyards: Canto de Zé Cruz (with sandy soils mixed with granite boulders and clays), Rochedo (with granite and schist), Palmeiras (deep clayey soils with good drainage) and Machuguinho (at an altitude of 400 metres with granitic soils and sandy texture).
The entire Herdade do Esporão vineyard is cultivated organically, taking special care over all the details, understanding how to savour the moment and without compromising the future of the vineyards. This way of thinking is carried over into the winery, where Esporão Private Selection Tinto is made in different phases. We might just be looking at one of the most special vinifications that begins by working each plot separately. While the Aragonez and Touriga Nacional grapes ferment in marble vats, the Alicante Bouschet ferments in concrete tanks. What the varieties will have in common is the aging process, in 500-litre French oak barrels, where they will undergo malolactic fermentation and spend more than two years (followed by a couple more years in the bottle).
Esporão Private Selection Tinto is a red wine with character that knows what it is doing. Not suitable for undiscerning people who are unable to distinguish all its unique touches and characteristics.

2016 | Esporão Private Selection Tinto 2016 is a mature and complex red wine that is powerful and filled with character, and a deep, dark colour. The nose is full of nuances, with black fruits that combine perfectly with hints of fresh cocoa and pepper. The palate is silky and compact, with fine tannins. Intense and persistent finish. |
