About Esporão Private Selection Blanco
Portugal and the D.O.C. Alentejo are renowned for their red wines; however, in this region, renowned for producing exceptional wines, there is also a niche for white wines such as Esporão Private Selection Blanco.
The wineries of Esporão have been demonstrating this since 2001, the year they launched Esporão Private Selection Blanco, a single-varietal Sémillon that originates in the Alentejo. Traditionally, this French grape variety had not been cultivated in the southern Portuguese region. Yet, the passage of time and dedicated viniculture have vindicated David Baverstock, the winemaker who introduced this variety to Portugal, where it has yielded highly satisfying results. In fact, one of the factors that encouraged Baverstock to make this bold move was the climatic resemblance between Alentejo and Barossa Valley (in Australia), where the hot summers and significant diurnal temperature variation allow this grape to thrive splendidly. Nevertheless, in the Portuguese case, the deep, well-drained granitic-clay soils of the Palmeiras plot in Herdade dos Perdigões also play a significant role, where vines of more than 24 years of age are cultivated. Indeed, the northwest exposure of this plantation shields the grape clusters from the most intense heat, resulting in wines that are fresher and more finely delineated.
This intrinsic freshness is something that is meticulously preserved throughout the winemaking process. For this reason, Esporão Private Selection Blanco is harvested in the early morning hours, to circumvent the peak heat and ensure that the grapes arrive at the winery in optimal condition. From the field, the grapes are immediately transferred to a pneumatic press, where long cycles at low pressures are programmed to achieve gentle extractions and high-quality musts. Following this, Esporão Private Selection Blanco is racked directly into French oak barrels exceeding 500 liters, where fermentation occurs at a controlled temperature of 18°C. Here, Esporão Private Selection Blanco will spend nearly half a year on its lees (the dead yeast cells), during which time battonages and daily stirring take place. Thanks to this process, a wine with enhanced body is produced, yielding a wine that is considerably more rounded on the palate, aiding in stabilization and achieving a creamier texture. Yet, the journey of Esporão Private Selection Blanco does not end there, as after this period, the wine will continue its maturation in the bottle for nearly another half-year.
A truly remarkable white wine that sets a new benchmark in the realm of reds.
2020 | Esporão Private Selection Blanco 2020 is an opulent and sophisticated white wine, presenting a crystalline hue with straw-colored and greenish tints. The bouquet is intricate, featuring fruity aromas (apricot, lemon) intertwined with classic oak-infused notes such as white pepper. A hint of fresh almond lingers in the background. On the palate, it is lush and abundant with white-fleshed fruit and a touch of nutmeg. It culminates in a prolonged and highly refined finish. |
