About Jose Gil El Calado del Espino

If you spend a few days in La Rioja, there is an almost obligatory visit that doesn't always appear in the guides: descending underground. Down there, hidden beneath streets and vineyards, stretch the cellars—or "calaos," as they are locally known—authentic labyrinths carved into the earth where wine has been crafted and stored for centuries. Passageways, vaults, and caves that exude history, silence, and a constant coolness. Almost magical places that, fortunately, have remained practically untouched in many villages to this day.

One such cellar is El Calado del Espino, the heart of Jose Gil's project. In 2011, Jose acquired this subterranean winery located at the highest point of San Vicente de la Sonsierra (DOCa Rioja). Two years later, he began producing his first wines, although it wasn't until the extraordinary 2016 vintage that the project was officially unveiled to the world. A debut that did not go unnoticed.

Behind the name are Jose Gil and Vicky Fernández, two young viticulturists from Rioja Alta who, in just a few years, have managed to capture the attention of international critics. Jose hails from a family of winegrowers in San Vicente and, after studying oenology, decided to go beyond the family legacy to forge his own path. Thus was born Jose Gil Vigneron, a small, precise project deeply connected to the land.

Today, they cultivate about 11 hectares of old bush vines, spread between San Vicente de la Sonsierra and Labastida. With a distinctly Burgundian approach, they produce village wines, site-specific wines, and single-vineyard wines, always from meticulous, manual, and highly respectful viticulture. A young project, but one with a well-defined personality... one to keep an eye on.

El Calado del Espino originates from 8 hectares of vineyards in the Sonsierra region of Rioja, on loamy soils with a presence of limestone stones. It is crafted from 100% Viura sourced from vines aged between 50 and 80 years, mostly from a vineyard in Labastida, complemented by grapes from the El Bardallo plot in San Vicente.

The harvest is manual, and the winemaking process combines tradition and sensitivity: 70% of the wine ferments in 500-litre French oak barrels, while the remaining 30% ferments in 54-litre demijohns. After fermentation, the wine undergoes a year of ageing, gaining complexity without losing freshness or identity.

El Calado del Espino is a wine that speaks of its origin, of its old vines, and of that Rioja subsoil where time seems to move at a different pace. A white wine with the soul of a cellar: silent, profound, and steeped in history.
