About Los Yelsones

Luis Gutiérrez, the esteemed wine critic for Spain at The Wine Advocate (Robert Parker), has been astounded by a collective of winemakers hailing from San Vicente de la Sonsierra, a village nestled within the eminent La Rioja Alta region. This group is making waves internationally with members such as Pedro Balda, Miguel and Enrique Cupiani, José Gil, and Eduardo Eguren.
 
Specifically, the latter, Eduardo Eguren, is the vintner behind the sophisticated Cuentaviñas Los Yelsones, a red wine crafted under the prestigious D.O.Ca Rioja designation. As a scion of the renowned Eguren family (Sierra Cantabria, Viñedos de Páganos, Teso la Monja), representing the fifth generation, Eduardo has embarked on an independent venture. With the support of his entrepreneurial partner, the Cuentaviña wineries were established, where the essence of the craft is rooted in the vineyard. "It's not about making wine, but rather cultivating it."
 
Like a tale spun by a storyteller, the wordplay gives rise to wines developed in La Raz, a plot located in Peciña. The soil of this hamlet, which dwindles to a single inhabitant in winter and rises to a population of thirty in summer, is perched at an altitude of 700 meters and is distinguished by two characteristic elements: moraines and yelsons. Moraines are accumulations of silt and soil left by glacial action, while yelsons are blocks of calcium carbonate that imbue the wines with freshness and balance.
 
It is within this context that Cuentaviñas Los Yelsones is born. This vibrant red wine, flourishing under an Atlantic climate, is harvested by hand in 15-kilogram boxes. The secret to its vinification lies in the French oak barrels. Here, the wine undergoes an initial fermentation and maceration process lasting 28 days. Afterwards, it is transferred to new 500-liter barrels to commence malolactic fermentation. It is within these very casks that the wine ages for 18 months, followed by a further 3 months of bottle maturation.
