Whether due to an overabundance of technical jargon or a lack of empathy in its dissemination, today's youth often find themselves distanced from the wine culture. Addressing this issue, the Kibayashi brothers, enthusiasts of both wine and manga, successfully bridged this gap with the creation of "The Drops of God". This acclaimed manga intertwines the protagonist Shizuku Kanzaki's journey of discovery with an exhilarating quest to identify 13 legendary wines following the demise of his father, a renowned wine critic. This innovative approach enabled young Asians to delve into the world of wine in an accessible, educational, and entertaining manner, creating a cultural and commercial phenomenon. Such was its success that it was adapted into a television series, and its popularity soared to the extent that when the final legendary wine, Château le Puy 2003, was unveiled, the Amoreau family, proprietors of the winery, experienced an explosive surge in sales, prompting them to withdraw the vintage from the market due to the ensuing speculation. Indeed, Jean-Pierre and Pascal Amoreau, the fifteenth generation managing this estate located on the so-called plateau of wonders in Libourne, Bordeaux (France), are well aware that their wines are more than mere products; they embody centuries of family tradition and a philosophy of respect for the terroir.
With a vineyard now spanning 51 hectares divided into three plots, since 1990 the Amoreau family has been committed to reviving past practices where the vines are cultivated naturally according to ancestral methods, without the addition of chemical fertilisers, herbicides, insecticides, or pesticides, and the ageing of their wines is done without the addition of sulphites. An example of this work can be found in Château Le Puy Marie-Cécile, a white wine crafted from the semillon grape variety, sourced from vines planted on soils composed of clay, silica, and limestone at approximately 110 metres above sea level. These vines are part of the Côtes Francs de Bordeaux appellation and are cultivated biodynamically. In the winery, vinification and ageing are conducted naturally, without sulphites and through dynamisation in barrels, according to the lunar phases over the course of 8 months.
As indicated on the label, Château Le Puy Marie-Cécile is a pure "Original Expression of the Terroir". This characteristic stands out not only for the quality of its contents but also for its presentation: an elegant bottle sealed with yellow wax, providing a distinctive artisanal touch to this true gem of Bordeaux. An experience brimming with history, passion, and humanity that invites everyone to savour these authentic drops of god.
