About Celler Sanromà L’Estranger

For years, foreign grape varieties descended upon Spanish vineyards like true guest stars. Cabernet sauvignon, merlot, chardonnay, syrah… many wineries welcomed them with open arms, while many native grapes were uprooted or, worse still, consigned to oblivion.

Today, fortunately, the script has changed. There is an exhilarating return to origins and a revival of the native viticultural heritage. However, this comeback need not be exclusive. For some of those foreign varieties that arrived decades ago not only took root: they learned to speak the local language. Some even speak it with their own accent.

That is precisely what Celler Sanromà proposes with its wine L’Estranger. A red wine that is not an exception, but a reflection. It looks without complexes at those foreign grapes now fully integrated and proves that not everything that came from outside is out of place.

The Celler Sanromà project was born from a lineage of four generations of winegrowers dedicated to selling bulk grapes. But when Eduard Sanromà completed his oenology studies, he decided to turn the family legacy around. His aim is to bottle the landscape, transforming the grapes from their own estates into honest wines, which speak with their own voice and minimal intervention.

Among these wines, Celler Sanromà L’Estranger holds a very special place. Not because it is different, but because it demonstrates that difference can also take root.

This single-varietal syrah comes from young vines planted in 2016 on a mosaic of clay, sandstone, limestone, and conglomerates, in the municipality of Vila-rodona (Tarragona). Organic vineyard, manual harvest, and a lot of sensitivity from the field.

In the winery, fermentation takes place over 7 days with skins and stems, without added yeasts, in stainless steel tanks. After a gentle pressing to preserve the fruit as much as possible, the wine rests for two months on its lees, also in stainless steel. No embellishments.

Celler Sanromà L’Estranger is a fresh, direct wine, with a youthful yet determined character. A red wine that does not deny its origin but claims its place. Because what matters is not where you come from, but what you do with what you have. And this "foreigner" has already learned to speak the language of the land. With its own accent.
