New Consumer Trends: Tell Me What You Drink and I'll Tell You Who You Are

02/04/2025 Winemaking

It is undeniable that the way we consume alcohol is undergoing a transformation. Various social factors, such as health consciousness and environmental concerns, have introduced a plethora of terms: Mindful Drinking, Zebra Stripping, Sober Curious... Does all this sound like Greek to you? Stay with us in this article, and we'll enlighten you about these trends.

For the environmentally conscious...

Do you notice something unusual in your glass of wine? Have you tasted a new, unfamiliar flavour? Allow us to inform you that the unique taste your taste buds have just discovered is the distinctive flavour of a natural wine. And we assure you, they are here to stay!

In recent years, trends have focused on vegan wines, where any animal products (or derivatives thereof) are excluded from the production process. Thus, traditional practices like ploughing or egg white fining have become obsolete. Now, we are moving towards the next phase, where natural wines take the spotlight. Always crafted with minimal intervention and with a very limited or zero sulphur content, these bottles offer a universe that shines with an abundance of indigenous yeasts and the absence of additives, fining, and filtration.

Although this category has not yet been legally defined, it is steadily gaining followers. If you wish to explore it, we recommend starting with some of our natural wines or vegan wines.

For the trendies…

In the wine world, as in everything else, there are trends. Original and innovative wines that break the mould, crafted with new techniques, forgotten varieties that have been revived, emerging regions… Do you also want to be fashionable and stay ahead of the curve?

This is easily achieved with any wine from Raúl Moreno, a Sevillian who, after several years abroad, returns to his homeland championing a project that revives forgotten varieties (such as perruna) or creates unconventional wines (multi-day macerations combined with ageing under flor). Start with Raúl Moreno La Retahila 2022 and keep us posted...

For the oenophiles…

Currently, very much in vogue, this trend encompasses all those wine connoisseurs who scrutinise the label before buying any bottle or taking a sip. Evidently, this entails greater control and obsession with production processes, always seeking the highest quality (even if it means paying more at the checkout). We all have a friend who is an oenophile. And if you don't, it's probably you.

Is this month's budget only enough for two bottles instead of three? No problem. Consider any wine from Verónica Ortega.

For the fresh enthusiasts…

Legends say that in the past, heavy wines with long ageing and woody flavours were the most coveted. Fortunately, the curse has been broken, and more and more enthusiasts are embracing this new preference for young, light, fresh, and easy-to-drink wines.

Finding the perfect occasion to taste it might be challenging, as any moment will seem perfect! Nevertheless, if you manage to do so, we recommend trying a Pet-Nat or Rosé from our selection.

For the tireless…

The Zebra Stripping trend involves alternating alcoholic beverages with their corresponding non-alcoholic versions. A few years ago, this option was unthinkable, but today, thanks to new production processes (where companies have invested time and money), this trend—now fully normalised at any event—allows the party to continue until the end.

Rum, whisky, gin… In our Non-Alcoholic section, you'll find the best 0.0% versions of your favourite spirits.

For the classics…

Classics never die, and it's always better to play it safe. Therefore, if your choices revolve around the finest wines from DOCa. Rioja, DO. Ribera del Duero, or the noble fortified wines, rest assured you belong to this group. A consistent history, the most sophisticated expression of each region, traditional production methods... Nothing can go wrong here.

For the responsible…

You've likely heard that more than one celebrity has embraced the Mindful Drinking or Sober Curious movements, which have become a lifestyle. While the former involves consuming alcohol in a much more responsible and conscious manner, the latter advocates for its complete elimination. This trend emerged in 2013 when the British organisation Alcohol Change UK launched the Dry January challenge, proposing a reduction in alcohol consumption during January. The response was overwhelming, and hundreds of people incorporated this idea into their routine, maintaining it throughout the year.

However, neither Mindful Drinking nor Sober Curious implies sacrificing flavour, and more and more people are joining these new ways of drinking, which are not difficult to follow with some of the options we present from Non-Alcoholic Wines.

For the daring…

If these new trends stand out for anything, it's that they have liberated wine. Now, without constraints or restrictions, red, white, and sparkling wines break free from formal protocols and venture into bars, homes, and wine shops to conquer the world (literally). Pairing your serrano ham sandwich with a sparkling wine (why not?) or enjoying a well-chilled white wine at the beach without having to carry the entire bottle is possible thanks to new formats like the bag in box of Rojalet Negre con crianza or the mini version of Pizzolato M-Use Zero Sparkling.

If you're still not sure whether you're traditional or cutting-edge, don't worry, we've just explained it to you in this video.
