About Valduero Blanco Reserva

The history of the Ribera del Duero has been almost exclusively penned with red ink. For decades, thinking of this region meant thinking of the robustness of the country's ink and the strength of its reds. However, long before the regulatory council officially allowed the production of white wines in the denomination, sisters Yolanda and Carolina García Viadero had already decided to look where no one else was looking. With unwavering faith in the potential of the native grape albillo mayor, they championed it when it was a variety relegated and forgotten. They were not seeking a young white for quick consumption, but to demonstrate that the Ribera landscape could give birth to a monumental aged white, capable of withstanding the test of time.

From the locality of Gumiel de Izán, in the estates La Yunquera and Buenos Santos and under the auspices of the DO Ribera del Duero, Valduero Blanco Reserva originates from trellised plots situated at an altitude of 850 metres above sea level. The albillo mayor vines are 20 years old, thriving in sandy gravel soils enriched with sheep manure. These are poor soils with very low yields, about 2,500 kilograms per hectare, which limit production in favour of high concentration. The area's climate records an average annual rainfall of 400 millimetres and an extreme thermal range, with maximum and minimum temperatures ranging from 40 to -19 °C, allowing for the preservation of impeccable natural acidity. The cultivation philosophy is based on a respectful care of the environment, with manual harvesting in 14-kilogram boxes.

The production of Valduero Blanco Reserva follows an artisanal and precise process in the winery. Once harvested by hand, the grape clusters are manually destemmed in 500-litre wooden barrels. The must then undergoes alcoholic fermentation, the natural transformation of grape sugars into alcohol, driven by native yeasts that impart the character and personality of the terroir. Subsequently, the wine undergoes a long ageing process of 4 years in barrels of various origins, a period during which the wine is slowly oxygenated and acquires a profound structure before being bottled.

Valduero Blanco Reserva is a wine of immense complexity, tense and deeply aromatic, where maturity, wood, and freshness intertwine with fluidity. The living testament of pioneering women who knew how to anticipate history.
