About Quintessa
To be able to live and spend time in Quintessa is a privilege. This is the opinion of Augustin and Valeria Hunneus, the owners of this paradise that lies between hills and valleys in the A.V.A. Rutherford and is home to a wide variety of soils and microclimates. Today this business, which was founded in 1990 in the Napa Valley (north of San Francisco), only makes Quintessa, a fine and elegant red wine of great quality that is flavoursome and a true reflection of the beauty of the landscape. Better to get one thing right than many wrong, right?
Quintessa is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Carmenère and Petit Verdot. All these varieties are grown in the 64 hectares belonging to this winery. In fact, all the vineyards in the area are planted on gravelly, well-drained soils and lying between 47 and 152 metres above sea level. Here the vines are influenced by the fog from the San Pablo Bay, cooling the plants at night to counteract the heat and high temperatures of the day. They are also grown organically, always trying to find a balance between the work of man and nature. At the moment of truth, Quintessa is harvested manually and at night (in order to maintain the good condition of the grapes). Here, at this point, a ritual takes place, one that is unique to this winery. “Early in the morning, when the first delivery of freshly picked grapes from our vineyard arrives, all the employees gather in a circle on the crush pad,” explains winemaker Rebekah Wineburg. “Then the vineyard manager selects a bunch of grapes and passes them to the vineyard team, then to our winemaking team, then to our hospitality and sales team. In doing this, we honour all the people who help make and sell the wine.”
However, this is not the only unique feature of this winery, since every year they start their fermentations with already fermenting must made from the estate’s native yeasts. So every year, they collect some grapes and bunches before the harvest. These are placed in a container and they add wild flowers and small stones. This mixture is left to settle for a few days under one of the estate’s oak trees, waiting for the yeasts to start working on their own. Later, this small fermentation is added to the tanks where the rest of the must is stored, ensuring that the resulting wine acquires a unique and special touch that only this estate can give it.
| 2018 | Quintessa 2018 is a concentrated, deep and very elegant red wine. The nose is intense, with aromas of cassis, black cherries and raspberries complemented by hints of sage, thyme and spices (graphite, tobacco, dark chocolate). The palate is dense and well balanced with smooth tannins. Fresh acidity and bright fruit. Mineral. |
