Mauro Godello is a single-varietal white wine crafted by Bodegas Mauro from vineyards located in Villafranca del Bierzo and Valtuille de Arriba. Although the García family is widely acclaimed for their exceptional red wines, in 2013 they decided to explore the potential of godello and produce a white wine with the same level of rigor that had previously defined their trajectory.
The project began with a production of merely a thousand bottles and, over the years, it has evolved into one of the family's most distinctive white wines. The grapes for Mauro Godello come from various plots situated at an altitude of approximately 650 metres, on impoverished soils composed of sand, decomposed slate, and alluvial-origin pebbles. This austere terrain limits yields and promotes an expression marked by freshness and minerality.
The harvest is conducted manually, and once at the winery, Mauro Godello undergoes a delicate pressing followed by a skin maceration for 12 hours at a low temperature. After a gentle static settling, the must ferments in 500-litre French oak barrels, both new and used. It remains there for several months on its fine lees, a period that imparts texture and depth without overshadowing the variety.
Mauro Godello is a limited-production wine with great ageing potential, designed to demonstrate that the García family can also excel when the grape's colour changes. A precise, fresh, and elegant godello that finds in the soils of Bierzo and its ageing on lees the necessary depth to evolve over time.
