About I Custodi delle Vigne dell'Etna Nerello Cappuccio

Considered Etna’s second most important red grape, the Nerello Cappuccio variety grows beautifully in Sicily’s volcanic soils. And although it takes a back seat to its cousin the Nerello Mascalese, which is more widely planted and considered to be higher quality, the variety thrives on the slopes of Mount Etna with smooth, richly coloured single-variety wines with fruity flavours. Someone with a deep knowledge of the intrinsic characteristics of the Nerello Cappuccio is Salvo Foti, a winemaker who has revived the ancient association I Custodi delle Vigne dell'Etna (“The guardians of Etna's vineyards”) and aims to champion Etna’s winemaking tradition.

Proof of his deep understanding of the native Nerello Cappuccio variety lies in I Custodi delle Vigne dell'Etna Nerello Cappuccio, a single-variety wine from the DOC Etna Rosso that starts life at about 700 m above sea level, on terraces of sandy, volcanic soils and very rich in minerals. Organic at heart, Foti uses organic agriculture in an artisan way and the grapes are harvested by hand, with a careful selection in small boxes. Once they reach the winery, the grapes are destemmed and crushed, and maceration lasts about a week in stainless steel tanks at a constant temperature. The wine is then aged for a period of time before bottling.

I Custodi delle Vigne dell'Etna Nerello Cappuccio is made possible by protecting the land, cultivating historic vines and respecting the environment. A flavoursome and mineral wine that brings to the forefront the worthy Nerello Cappuccio native variety.

I Custodi delle Vigne dell'Etna Nerello Cappuccio 2020 is a concentrated red wine with an aromatic profile of red fruit notes, mineral hints and ferrous touches. The palate is full, flavoursome and pleasant. A wine with a good structure and a long and jovial persistence.
