Behind every great man there is always a great woman. In the case of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, in its more than 300 years of history, there have been several: Marie Desjean, Marie du Luc Ravez, Lucie-Caroline Johnston, Princess Marie Karadja of Constantinople, Mary de Burke... They have all played a key role in the history of this historic Saint-Julien AOC property. And now they are being honoured with Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Madame de Beaucaillou.
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Madame de Beaucaillou is a red wine born from the assemblage of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou and Le Petit Ducru de Ducru-Beaucaillou, the three fine wines of this house. However, the real magic of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Madame de Beaucaillou lies is in its terroir, located in the Médoc, in Bordeaux (western France). Right on this peninsula, exposed to the influence of the Gironde, the weather will be shaped by the air masses arriving from the estuary (the largest in Europe at 635 km²). Specifically, in this enclave, there are four large tides every day where a large amount of water rises. This inevitably has an impact, especially on temperatures, softening the cold of winter and cooling the heat of summer. Also noteworthy is its soil, where gravels, loams and pebbles are mixed. As the story goes, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou owes its name to these quartz pebbles, historically transported and deposited by the Gironde, which are essential for the well-being of the vineyards. While their poor nature forces the vines to seek nutrients in the loam (located in the deepest layers), these ridges retain heat during the day to release it at night and ensure proper ripening of the grapes.
Excellence will always be the maxim at Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. This can only be achieved by working directly in the vineyard, where they are fully committed to respectful practices. "Man is just passing through," they claim at the property. In order to keep the footprint to a minimum, pesticides and herbicides have been abandoned in favour of a much more natural approach to cultivation, advised by the Institut national de la recherche agronomique (INRA). The work begins in the vineyard itself, with a meticulous selection of the best bunches that must reach the cellar. This phase will be completed on a long sorting table at the entrance of the cellar, where only the best grapes will be transferred to the vinification room for the production of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Madame de Beaucaillou. In the Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Madame de Beaucaillou vat room, the wine is vinified in new-generation, low-capacity tapered stainless steel tanks, where the greatest possible precision is achieved. In fact, each plot and each variety is vinified separately. Finally, after barrel aging, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Madame de Beaucaillou will be blended and released for sale.
