About Raúl Pérez Valdecañada

With over 200 labels to his name and a perfect score of 100 points from Parker, Raúl Pérez is one of the most globally renowned Spanish winemakers. Always prioritising the vineyard, he has been involved in numerous projects that draw on the methods of his ancestors, resulting in revolutionary wines that have amazed and delighted. His contribution to the world of wine not only elevates the art of winemaking but also inspires new generations of producers to explore and celebrate the unique diversity and potential of each terroir.

A highly energetic man, despite his frequent collaborative work, he also presents more personal projects such as this Raúl Pérez Valdecañada. This red wine is crafted from the indigenous mencía variety sourced from eight distinct plots in the Ponferrada subzone of Bierzo, in Castilla y León (Spain). The old vines, planted on slate and schist soils, are cultivated with the utmost respect for nature. The harvest is early and done by hand, and once in the winery, the 100% whole clusters undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in an open neutral vat, followed by 6 months of post-fermentation maceration and transfer to neutral French oak barrels of 225 litres where the wine will remain for approximately one year. Finally, the wine is bottled without fining or filtration.

Resulting from a field blend that perfectly expresses the great potential of the mencía variety, Raúl Pérez Valdecañada is a gem to be enjoyed on any occasion. A wine that not only offers an unparalleled sensory experience but also significantly contributes to the reputation and evolution of Spanish viticulture on an international level.
