About Weingut Prager Steinriegl Federspiel
West of Weißenkirchen (a municipality located in Lower Austria), the soil is rich in limestone, marble, and silicate—a unique and distinctive composition, almost impossible to find elsewhere in the country. In these special soils, located in the Steinriegl vineyard (west of Weißenkirchen), riesling grapes thrive, which are used to produce Weingut Prager Steinriegl Federspiel.
This single-varietal wine is the creation of Weingut Prager, one of the most renowned and celebrated producers in Austria thanks to its single-vineyard wines. At this winery, no two glasses of wine are the same, a fact well known to Ilse and Toni Bodenstein, the couple who have been running the family business since the 1990s. The couple is largely responsible for the winery's revival, particularly due to the efforts of Toni Bodenstein, who conducted an extensive geological study of Wachau, one of the world's most fascinating regions (and a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Located in the heart of the Danube Valley, between Melk and Krems, its origins date back millions of years when the Danube gradually eroded the soils. This fluvial process carved a path, transforming the landscape into steep terraces and slopes. As a result, the geological variety of this area is immense, with predominantly rocky soils where riesling and grüner veltliner have firmly taken root.
In the case of Weingut Prager, these native varieties flourish in the 16 hectares the winery has spread across the region: an oenological gem over 60 years old that produces some of the world's finest white wines. Organic cultivation, vinification in stainless steel tanks (avoiding the use of wood), and a minimalist approach in the winery are the principles that have propelled this winery to the top. Although revolutionary in their time, decades later they have proven that only in this way can the unique characteristics and true nature of each of their parcels be revealed. As the winery's motto states, "From rock to wine," with nothing interfering between the terroir and the palate.

2021 | Weingut Prager Steinriegl Federspiel 2021 is a very elegant and refined wine. The nose is very stimulating and complex, with a great expression of terroir. A very mineral character and touch that combine with citrus, white flowers, peach and yeast. The palate is acidic and lively, with a light exotic touch of grapefruit and lemongrass. The green pear also appears in the background. |
