About Von Winning Jesuitengarten GG Riesling
Until 1773 the Society of Jesus, one of the best known religious orders, owned one of the best vineyards in the German Palatinate. These hectares of vineyards, composed of red sandstones with basalts and calcareous clayey loams, were ranked second in the Bavarian Site Classification of 1828. Today, in honour of the time the religious group spent here, this place is known as Jesuitengarten where Von Winning Jesuitengarten GG Riesling is born.
Facing southeast, and with an altitude between 120 and 150 metres above sea level, these seven hectares of vineyards are some of the best in the world. Here, in southwestern Germany, the soils are composed of red sandstone, with basalt and clayey and calcareous loams that have a high humus content. This soil perfectly retains the 1,800 hours of sunshine that this region, one of the warmest in the country, enjoys. Thanks to this heat, the grapes ripen perfectly, making them some of the best in the German vineyards. Several wineries grow their Riesling (the most widely planted variety) here. One of those is Von Winning, a historic winery in the area with six hectares from which they manage to extract all the character of their wines.
Although this plantation, which is completely respectful of the environment, is shared with other companies, the touch of grace comes in the winery itself, where Von Winning makes magic, giving the special touch to all their wines. Von Winning are masters of wood, achieving spectacular spontaneous fermentations in 500-litre oak barrels, where they also age (for approximately two years). “Very spicy, with a very fine reduction and deep fruit”, Von Winning accompanies his tasting notes by assuring us that this is his “rarest GG”. We will have to try it and see for ourselves.
2020 | Von Winning Jesuitengarten GG Riesling 2020 is a creamy white wine with aromas of ripe white fruit, citrus notes and hints of pastries. On the palate it is unctuous, fresh and complex . A wine with noticeable acidity, a fatty mid-palate and a long and persistent finish. |
