When Dido and Jur met by chance in a park in Amsterdam and went for a white beer, they had no idea that their lives would end up in the world of wine. The course was set when Dido moved to South Africa to do his anthropology thesis in a wine estate in Swartland, Donovan Rall Wines and, captivated by everything he learnt there about viticulture, he invited Jur to join him on this fascinating adventure. After that experience the two Dutchmen had made a decision. They needed to travel the world and learn from the best in order to set up their own natural wine project. This is how, after working with great winemakers like Sara Pérez and René Barbier, Ramón Escoda, Dylan Grigg and Tom Shobbrook, they fell in love with the village of Rabos, in the Alt Empordà (Catalonia) and, through crowdfunding, they founded Vinyes Tortuga. A completely independent estate powered by solar panels and well water where the two winegrowers and vineyards live together in complete harmony.
This is where Vinyes Tortuga Hunky Dory comes from, a single-variety Garnacha Tinta from slate soils where the vines are cultivated according to ecological, biodynamic and permacultural practices. All the work is done by hand and, once the grapes are ready, they are carefully destemmed and undergo a 5-day carbonic maceration. Alcoholic fermentation takes place with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine then rests for 6 months in stainless steel tanks and amphorae.
Taking great care in the vineyard to grow a pure grape that nothing needs to be added to, or taken away from, Vinyes Tortuga Hunky Dory is light, expressive and full of fruit. An unconventional natural wine that, once you try it, you won't be able to stop drinking.
Vinyes Tortuga Hunky Dory 2020 is a juicy red wine with aromas of fresh red fruit, notes of aromatic plants and hints of spices. On the palate it is smooth, refreshing and deep. A wine with a certain structure that reveals present acidity, marked tannins and a subtly mineral finish.
