About Swartberg Wingerde Holism Garnacha OV
Small entrepreneurs, particularly in the wine industry, must master a multitude of disciplines. They are not only responsible for sourcing the finest raw materials and the most suitable resources, but they must also manage marketing, accounting, and even distribution strategies. Moreover, in their daily routines, the vintner sometimes has to venture into uncharted territories in pursuit of the finest grapes.
Rudiger Gretschel, in his career as a winemaker, has been a true explorer who found his vinous paradise in a mountainous region in the Western Cape of South Africa, known as Piekenierskloof. This area, renowned for its citrus and rooibos tea cultivation, has recently caught the attention of wine enthusiasts as a location with immense potential. A region with its untamed nature and impressive altitude, at the foot of the majestic Swartberg mountain, distinguished by its unspoiled natural beauty and virgin land, with only a few hectares dedicated to vineyard cultivation.
It is in this unique environment that Rudiger produces one of the most distinctive wines of the region: Swartberg Wingerde Holism Garnacha OV. A wine that embraces the concept of holism, inspired by the South African statesman Jan Smuts, which understands that everything is interconnected: the land, the people, the organisms, and the wine. The garnacha used comes from old vines planted on the Piekeniersplateau, at an altitude of 600 metres. The combination of arid soils, warm climate, and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean makes this grape a unique raw material.
Following a manual harvest, the grapes are meticulously processed: half are transferred to concrete tanks, where they are foot-crushed, and the other half is destemmed before being added. Fermentation is conducted with natural yeasts, and the wine matures in stainless steel barrels to preserve its freshness and fruity character. A small portion of the wine is aged in used wooden barrels, imparting body and smoothness.
Swartberg Wingerde Holism Garnacha OV, as its name suggests, is the result of a holistic vision that transcends mere winemaking. It is a reflection of the natural harmony of Piekenierskloof, where viticulture adapts to the environment rather than imposing upon it. A wine that is not merely consumed, but explored from start to finish.
