About Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Tradition

Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Tradition is a barrel-aged white wine made with the Riesling variety by the Schloss Gobelsburg winery in Niederöstereich (Austria).

Schloss Gobelsburg is one of the oldest wineries in the Austrian Danube. The estate, a Cistercian castle that dates back to 1171, is very close to the city of Langenlois, in the Kamp river valley and currently has 35 hectares of vineyards surrounding the castle. Michael Moosbrugger took charge in 1996 and, on the advice of Willi Bründlmayer, one of the most prestigious winemakers in Austria, he began to make noble wines, from unique vineyards and following the traditional ways of the ancient Cistercian monks.

The Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Tradition vines sit on slopes and terraces around the Gobelsburg castle. A total of 6 hectares of strains between 20 and 40 years old planted in gneiss soil and with a maximum yield of 40 hectolitres per hectare. They practice environmentally friendly agriculture, minimising the use of machinery. The harvest is carried out manually and placed in small boxes.

In the winery, Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Tradition grapes are gently pressed into a large Manhartsberg oak barrel. It is then vinified as it was when the monks were in charge, spontaneously, with native yeasts and without controlling the temperature. It then ages for 18 months in Austrian Manhartsberg oak barrels. After fermentation, the wine is racked every 3 or 4 months for two years before bottling.

Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Tradition is a white wine that holds onto the purity of its birthplace by being made in the Cistercian tradition. The fruit of expertise that is worth trying.
2014 Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Tradition 2014 is a creamy white wine with surprising fruitiness on the nose with hints of peach and pear. The palate is elegant, balanced, sweet and with a long and slightly salty finish.
