About Schieferkopf Lieu-Dit Buehl
The realm of Michel Chapoutier encompasses his roles as an oenologist and wine producer, yet it also extends to wine education, his leadership in the Rhône Valley, and his philosophy regarding viticulture and the connection with nature. Guided by the motto "fac et spera," a Latin phrase meaning "do and hope," he dedicates himself to his greatest passion with zeal and optimism, championing the most exceptional terroirs he discovers both within and beyond the Rhône. For Schieferkopf, it represents a Domaine with 8 hectares of vineyards he acquired in the commune of Bernardvillé, Alsace, lured by the region's distinctive blue schist soil which is known for imparting a pronounced mineral character to its wines. Owning various plots, each with its unique qualities, he crafts a collection of wines predominantly from the riesling variety that eloquently reflect the expertise of one of the vintners most esteemed by Parker and his keen eye for identifying unique soils.
In the case of Schieferkopf Lieu-Dit Buehl, it is a plot with a 40% slope where vines benefit from the unique schist soils. Riesling vines are cultivated organically and without the use of chemicals that might harm the natural balance of the terroir. When the grapes reach their optimal ripeness, they are hand-picked in 20-kilogram crates and transported directly to the winery. There, a lengthy pressing is initiated, followed by a cold static settling. Once the must is obtained, fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts and temperature control, and after malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 15 months in foudres.
Born from one of the few plots with blue schist found in Alsace, Schieferkopf Lieu-Dit Buehl is a white wine with an exceptional mineral concentration. A riesling from the Chapoutier universe that, thanks to his innovative approach and commitment to terroir expression, has become an essential of the Rhine Valley.
