About Santa Margherita Chianti Classico
In 1935 Gaetano Marzotto spotted the potential of the plain that stretched between Fossalta di Portogruaro and the Venice lagoon in northeastern Italy, which had been abandoned. The construction of an agricultural centre began the recovery of this area and the story of Santa Margherita, a winery that Marzotto named after his wife in her honour. This was just the beginning of the winery’s story, and soon this innovative spirit helped them to identify other territories in the rest of Italy. The next one was Tuscany, specifically in the D.O.C.G. Chianti Classico Riserva, where Santa Margherita Chianti Classico Riserva is still produced today.
Santa Margherita Chianti Classico Riserva is a great red wine made in one of the most famous places in Italy. Chianti is one of the oldest regions, where the vineyards grow on rocky and clayey soils (namely schist and sandy loams), between valleys and hillsides. Since Etruscan times, these fertile soils have been admired for the quality of their produce, and the Sangiovese variety occupies a prominent position (for the Santa Margherita wine, it is cultivated between 350 and 550 metres above sea level). Maintaining this noble condition, elegance and finesse is the ultimate goal of each of Santa Margherita’s productions.
With people and manual labour at the centre of all their work, the winery is committed to a very careful winemaking process. The harvest, which does not involve any type of machinery, is carried out in October. After the best clusters have been selected, Santa Margherita Chianti Classico Riserva is fermented in two stages to develop its full potential. However, the great secret of Santa Margherita Chianti Classico Riserva lies in its aging, where it spends two years in French oak barrels and three months in the bottle. These timescales are essential for Santa Margherita Chianti Classico to become one of the most unique and unrepeatable wines in Italy.
2020 | Santa Margherita Chianti Classico 2019 is a mature, very complex and structured red wine, it is full-bodied and full of character. Those who drink this wine know what they are doing. The nose is full of aromas ranging from cherries to plums, with floral (gladiolus) and flinty hints. This earthy character is maintained on the palate, where it is tannic and round, very warm and bright. Dry, earthy and fresh finish. |

2018 | Bursting with fruity essence and earthy undertones, the Santa Margherita Chianti Classico Riserva 2018 could be eloquently described as a red wine imbued with distinct character, robustness, and soul. Its extended maturation cloaks it in an array of nuances and hints that transform tasting into a magnificent display. On the nose, a prominent cherry note emerges, which then evolves and intertwines with the scent of gladiolus. This leads to a full-bodied and well-structured palate, exuding warmth, where a flinty accent makes its presence known. The finish is refreshingly crisp and lively. |
