About San Polo Brunello di Montalcino Podernovi
The San Polo winery, located in Montalcino (a town in the province of Siena, in Tuscany), is famous for its red wines made within the D.O.C.G. Brunello di Montalcino. If there is one thing this company, owned by the Allegrini family, can boast of, it is not being afraid of anything and always broadening their horizons. After all, this is how San Polo was born, a project that arose from this family’s interest in going beyond their small property in Valpolicella (in the Veneto region), where they became famous for their Amarone. Now it is time to go a step further and try out San Polo Brunello di Montalcino Podernovi, the area’s classic red wine that on this occasion is fermented in oak barrels.
Brunello di Montalcino is one of the world’s great wines. Made from Sangiovese, the area’s native grape known as Brunello, this red wine is exclusive to Montalcino, in northern Italy. To make San Polo Brunello di Montalcino Podernovi, the grapes come directly from the ‘Podernovi’ vineyard, located in this area, where they cultivate 3 hectares with a southwest orientation, on soils rich in marl and minerals, with a good amount of clay. The vines’ average age of 30 years old and the altitude of the vineyard (about 450 metres above sea level) guarantee the quality and exceptionality of these grapes. These qualities are very carefully taken care of, so much so that the grapes are harvested by hand at the beginning of October in small 17 kg crates to avoid crushing them.
The grapes arriving at the winery in good condition is fundamental and must be ensured throughout the rest of the San Polo Brunello di Montalcino Podernovi production process. After a selection of the best berries, the bunches go directly to the crusher, where the grapes are very gently pressed. From there, San Polo Brunello di Montalcino Podernovi is transferred to 2,500-litre conical Slavonian oak vats, where it ferments slowly for 28 to 30 days at a temperature between 28°C and 30°C. After this, San Polo Brunello di Montalcino Podernovi is transferred to 4,000-litre wooden barrels (lightly toasted), where it also undergoes malolactic fermentation. Here, in these barrels, it spends almost two and a half years. Aging is rounded off with half a year in the bottle before release.
Today, there are many producers who make Brunellos di Montalcino, but very few do so with the expertise of the Allegrini family. Here, with San Polo Brunello di Montalcino Podernovi, this family has taken a step further, managing to go up a level in terms of excellence.
