About Poggio Al Tesoro Bolgheri Superiore Sondraia

Tuscany’s fame comes from a fascinating combination of history, culture, art and landscape. However, the real magic of this Italian region lies in the beauty of its countryside. And if we had to choose one particularly wonderful area, it would undoubtedly be Bolgheri. A Tuscan village in the centre of Castagneto Carducci, in the province of Livorno, which has incredible characteristics for making superior quality wines. So when the Allegrini family, one of the most prestigious and experienced families in Valpolicella, was presented with the opportunity to set up their own winemaking project in this D.O., they didn’t think twice. Within the Poggio al Tesoro denomination, which literally means “hill of treasure”, they acquired a 70-hectare estate named after the impressive potential of this geographical location and the exceptional terroir.

This is clear to see in Poggio Al Tesoro Bolgheri Superiore Sondraia, a blend made from international Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes that enjoy the region’s sunniest area and a constant breeze from the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea. When the grapes reach optimum ripeness, they are harvested and taken straight to the winery. There the grapes are destemmed and gently pressed with the berries partially pressed. Fermentation happens in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28-30°C for 12-15 days. Malolactic fermentation is then carried out in barrels at a temperature of 22°C and, finally, the wine is aged in 225-litre French oak barrels (70% new and 30% second use) for 22 months.

After all this work, the Allegrini family presents Poggio Al Tesoro Bolgheri Superiore Sondraia, an aristocratic wine that exudes all the elegance as well as the strength of a magical territory. Pure representation of the “Bolgherese style”.

Poggio Al Tesoro Bolgheri Superiore Sondraia is a richly concentrated red wine exuding aromas of ripe red fruits, hints of aromatic herbs, and nuances of oak. On the palate, it is smooth, velvety, and earthy. This tannic wine boasts significant spicy complexity, underpinned by luscious and vibrant ripe fruit. The finish is extended and warmly satisfying.
