Mas Coutelou 5J 2016 is a creamy white wine with citrus aromas, floral notes and hints of lees. On the palate it is full, fresh and round. A wine with energetic acidity, an unctuous passage and a refreshing finish with subtle hints of bitter almond.

About Mas Coutelou 5J

Nervousness? Acid reflux? Headache? If you have these symptoms when you drink wine, next time open a bottle of Jean-Francois Coutelou. This vigneron, who calls himself "Jeff", was one of the first to implement organic certification on his Mas Coutelou estate in Languedoc (France) in 1987, and one of the first to embrace natural winemaking. A winery located in Puimisson, a charming Languedoc village north of Béziers, which has been in the family for four generations where the last member of the family has decided to move away from convention to work without chemicals and with the utmost respect.

Today, Mas Coutelou has 13 hectares composed of separate plots of traditional Languedoc varieties. The vines are planted in clay and limestone soils and surrounded by a large number of olive trees, bushes and protective hedges. It is in this wonderful biodiversity that Mas Coutelou 5J comes into being, a wine made from Grenache gris and Macabeo. Organic vines are grown and harvested by hand, reducing the impact on local ecosystems. In the winery, the work is just as discerning, with the objective of promoting the purest expression of the grape. After direct pressing, spontaneous fermentation begins with native yeasts and without adding sulfur. The wine is then aged for 2 years in cognac barrels for oxidative aging. Finally, it’s bottled without clarifying or filtering.

The result is extraordinary. Mas Coutelou 5J is a fresh, unctuous, round wine that can be included on the list of the most interesting natural wines currently available in the Languedoc. A delicious, simple rarity that leaves headaches far behind.
