In a country like Chile, where wine production is predominantly overseen by large industrial wineries, the Burgundian Louis-Antoine Luyt has emerged as the most ardent advocate of independent vinification. In the Valle de Maule, nestled within the viticultural Central Valley region, he employs the expertise honed in his native France to accentuate distinct terroirs, consistently working with a singular varietal, Pais. This grape, widely favored amongst Chilean peasants and traditionally not considered for high-quality wine production, is transformed under Louis-Antoine's meticulous care in each of the parcels he selects. His approach yields singular wines that are true expressions of ancient vineyards preserved unaltered over the years.
The Louis-Antoine Luyt El Mismo Pais originates from a two-hectare vineyard with decomposed granitic sandy soils in the Maule region. The vines are organically farmed, dry-farmed, and harvested by hand. In the winery, half of the clusters are left whole for carbonic maceration over eight days, while the other half is destemmed and undergoes spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. Once both lots have been vinified, they are blended, pressed, and bottled unfiltered with just 1-2 grams per liter of sulfur.
Aiming to capture the unspoiled terroir of Chile—a land fortuitously spared from the devastating phylloxera that ravaged Europe—Louis-Antoine Luyt releases this Louis-Antoine Luyt El Mismo Pais, the Chilean rendition of a Beaujolais Nouveau, presented in a one-liter bottle.
2021 |
Louis-Antoine Luyt El Mismo Pais 2021 is a succulent red wine bursting with aromas of fresh red fruit paired with saline herbs. On the palate, it is light, vivacious, and subtly tart. This slightly effervescent wine boasts a zesty acidity and is eminently quaffable. |
