El Sequé Dulce

2018

Tasting notes El Sequé Dulce 2018
Sweet wine Aged in wood. 12 months in French oak barrels 500 L.
El Sequé Dulce 2018 is a barrel-aged sweet wine that astonishes with its complexity. On the nose, one can detect intense aromas of ripe fruits such as figs, plums, and dates. On the palate, it is notably sweet and offers a smooth, velvety texture, with flavours reminiscent of candied fruits and a hint of honey. Its finish is long and persistent, leaving a pleasant sensation of sweetness.

About El Sequé Dulce
This story began in 1985, in Laguardia (a municipality in Alava, northern Spain) with a group of winegrowers, men and women, who founded Artadi, a winery that was set up with an eye on the vineyard and on maintaining the traditions and expertise of their ancestors. Artadi has now become a large group, with wineries in Alava, Guipuzcoa and Alicante, which are the birthplace of wines like El Sequé Dulce.
El Sequé Dulce is a fortified wine (very similar to the style of Vintage ports), made with Monastrell grapes in El Sequé, this group’s winery in the Valencian town of Pinoso, in the D.O. Alicante. In this area, where the Denomination of Origin was created in 1932, the winery has a total of 150 hectares of unirrigated land, where they mainly grow Monastrell (a variety native to the area that accounts for 75% of production). Here, the tradition that was started by Romans and Iberians is alive and well, with vines growing on sandy loam and sandy soils, with a texture that is especially favourable for vine cultivation, with its high porosity and permeability facilitating drainage and avoiding fungal diseases. The El Sequé Dulce vines grow at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level, with the unique feature of being at this altitude with a clay subsoil. This works together with the Mediterranean climate (mild, rainy winters and hot, sunny summers).
In terms of cultivation, current techniques are based on maintaining and passing on the experiences of their ancestors, focussing on passion and respect for the vineyard and avoiding industrial formulas. This philosophy begins in the vineyard, where they use organic and environmentally friendly agriculture, avoiding chemicals and phytosanitary products. The grapes are harvested by hand and only the best bunches are selected. In the winery, the El Sequé Dulce must is deposited in open tanks for cold maceration for 48 hours. This helps to extract both aroma and colour. After that, fermentation begins and lasts 3-4 days. After this, although the yeasts continue their work, fortifying spirit is added. This process, known as capping, will stop the yeast activity, leaving a residual sugar in the wine. Finally, El Sequé Dulce ages for 12 months in 500-litre French oak barrels.
The last bastion of tradition and purity.

2017 | El Sequé Dulce 2017 is a complex sweet wine, with 85 g/L of residual sugar and great fruity expression. The nose is aromatic, expressive and sweet, with notes of plums and raisins.
