About D'Arenberg The Love Grass Shiraz
Forewarned is forearmed! And they have warned us about how addictive D'Arenberg The Love Grass Shiraz is. This red wine is produced by the d'Arenberg winery in the McLaren Vale, in South Australia (30 minutes from the city of Adelaide). In this winery, which bases its work on biodynamic principles, flora and fauna are very important. None of their vineyards are cultivated with pesticides or chemicals, so their weeds are kept at bay in a much more rudimentary and simple way: with 200 sheep grazing among the vines during May, June, July and August. One of the plants on the menu is love grass, a sticky weed whose flowers stick to workers’ socks. And in theory, that’s how much D'Arenberg The Love Grass Shiraz will catch on.
D'Arenberg The Love Grass Shiraz is a red wine made from Syrah, the country’s most cultivated variety. In the case of d'Arenberg, which for years sold some of their wine to Penfold, the quality of their Syrah (grown on their 200 hectares of land) is extremely high. This is down to Chester Osborn, the current owner and fourth generation of the family, who works in the vineyard, looking for the best yields. Their work is based on two basic elements: firstly, a wide variety of soils (sandy, clayey and limestone); and secondly, a Mediterranean climate (with hot summers, mild winters and the influence of sea breezes).
From this point on, the only thing left to do is to take care of the health of the grape bunches using manual labour and natural remedies. In the winery, the D'Arenberg The Love Grass Shiraz is gently crushed to obtain the must, which is racked into open fermenters. Fermentation begins here, and before this process has finished, the grapes are gently crushed and pressed in baskets. From there, D'Arenberg The Love Grass Shiraz is transferred to French oak barrels where it will age for 18 months.
