About Clos des Centenaires Art'
Striving to create "digestible and refined" wines, distinctly removed from "over-extraction," is the goal that Luc Baudet and Bruno François aspire to in the crafting of Clos des Centenaires Art'.
This ethos is broadly applicable to all the wines produced at Clos des Centenaires, the winery managed by these two vintners in the eastern part of Languedoc and Roussillon, situated merely 40 minutes from Nîmes and in close proximity to the Provence border. Specifically, this region falls under the protected geographical indication of I.G.P. Pays d'Oc. Near the Mediterranean Sea and the lakes of the Petite Camargue nature reserve, their 7 hectares of vineyards are cultivated on a hill strewn with pebbles. The younger vines are trained in a south-southwesterly direction on trellises, while the older, mature vines - pruned using the gobelet method - face east-southeast. The climate here is mild, with extremely temperate summers and the interplay of the robust Mistral wind from the north and the thermal breezes, leading to gentle and extended ripening periods. Soil cultivation is done shallowly, with a particular focus on revitalizing the vines with their own biodynamic compost.
Naturally, considering such meticulous care, the harvest is carried out manually after closely and daily monitoring the phenolic ripeness (which indicates the status of phenolic compounds such as tannins and anthocyanins that impart color). For Clos des Centenaires Art', the must is macerated and fermented in either concrete or stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts. Throughout this process, the cap - a layer of grape skins that rises to the top of the tank due to carbon dioxide produced during fermentation - remains unbroken, so color extraction is achieved through pump-overs. This will be followed by a natural malolactic fermentation, which can occur in vats or barrels. The maturation of Clos des Centenaires Art' will last 18 months in French oak barrels, which will be stored in cellars with controlled temperatures. After this period, Clos des Centenaires Art' will be bottled on the estate.
2017 | Clos des Centenaires Art' 2017 is a richly concentrated red wine. Olfactorily, it is robust, exuding aromas of dark fruit, roasted nuances, licorice, and pepper. On the palate, it is refined, with polished and velvety tannins. It possesses a protracted finish. It is advisable to cellar for a minimum of five years. |
