Battenfeld Spanier Leopold is an organic Grüner Silvaner variety white wine made in the VDP Rheinhessen by the Battenfeld Spanier winery.
After years of learning the vine growing trade, a young Hans Oliver decided to set up his own independent winery in 1991. Battenfeld Spanier is known for being one of the first organic wineries in RheinhessenHohen-Sülzen. The biodynamic practices, the fantastic terroirs and the winemaker’s broad experience give rise to a wide range of exceptional quality wines.
Battenfeld Spanier Leopold comes from old vines grown in limestone soils and cultivated using biodynamic agriculture. The work they do in the vineyard includes using natural fertilisation, limiting the strains’ yield and carrying out all work in the vineyard manually. When the grape reaches optimum ripeness, it is harvested by hand.
In the winery, Battenfeld Spanier Leopold is vinified with minimal intervention. After a gentle and slow pressing, the must ferments spontaneously with native yeasts. Once fermented, the wine lightly ages on its fine lees.
Battenfeld Spanier Leopold, a name dedicated to the son of Hans Oliver and his wife Caroline, who is also a winemaker (from the Kühling Gillot winery), reveals the best expression of the Silvaner variety in the Rheinhessen wine region.

Battenfeld Spanier Leopold 2017 is a dry white wine with seductive herbaceous notes of lavender and basil, accompanied by an elegant touch of honey. This is a wine with power on the palate. Opulent and creamy with moderate acidity.
