About Abadal Arboset
The D.O. Pla del Bages, in the heart of Catalonia, is unmistakable for its microclimate (with low rainfall and large temperature fluctuations), its soils (clay-limestone with low yields), its varieties (where Picapoll stands out) and its dry stone vats (lying in the centre of the vineyard to ferment the wine). Now, all these elements come together in Abadal Arboset, a red wine that brings together the most representative elements of the Bages region.
Those in charge of working a miracle with Abadal Arboset are the Abadal winery, a company that has been making wines for more than eight centuries, where they aim to reflect the identity of this small territory (in the centre of Catalonia), showcasing the area’s native varieties like Picapoll, Madó and Sumoll. In fact, all of them, together with seven other varieties (Punxó Fort, Cap Pelat, Cua de Moltó, Malvasía, Pansera, Fumar and Cap Negre) are used to make Abadal Arboset. All these grapes are grown in the 70 hectares that this winery cultivates on terraces at different heights on clay and limestone soils. The vineyards Abadal Arboset comes from are more than 80 years old; however, what is really interesting here is the area’s noticeable Mediterranean microclimate with continental influences. As explained above, the temperature difference here between day and night is significant, which promotes the good development of anthocyanins (the polyphenolic compounds that give colour to the grapes). Thus, red wines made here are destined for success.
And just as tradition has been maintained throughout the cultivation of Abadal Arboset, the same is true in the production process. For this reason, Abadal Arboset ferments in dry stone vats located in the centre of the Arboset vineyard. At the moment this construction, which was used in ancient times to make wine directly without having to take it to the winery, is the only one that remains among the area’s vineyards. Finally, after fermentation, Abadal Arboset rests for approximately one year in clay amphorae and 500-litre oak barrels.
If you want to discover the D.O. Pla del Bages be sure to get your hands on Abadal Arboset, a red wine that expresses the most characteristic elements of this region in the centre of Barcelona.

2017 | Abadal Arboset 2017 is a smooth, cherry-coloured, light-bodied red wine, infused with balsamic notes and flavoured by the forests surrounding the vineyards. The nose is very aromatic, with aromas of forest fruits and citrus touches that evolve into ripe fruit, hints of liquorice and flowers (pine needles, rosemary, lavender). The palate is smooth and very acidic, with hints of aniseed, fennel and lemon verbena. Very deep finish. |
