More about Viña Mayor

The history of this Group started in 1876, when the Barceló family launched the Sansón Quinado wine on the market. Today, the current Bodegas Palacio 1894 Group is one of the most important wine groups in Spain, a reference for high-quality wines, with a century-old trajectory, and present in important denominations of origin in Spain: Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Rueda and Toro. With this change of name, Grupo Bodegas Palacio 1894 wants to transmit the transformation process that the company is undergoing, reinforcing the group to which the different wineries belong, but also giving greater importance to the identity and uniqueness of each of them: Bodegas Palacio, Bodegas y Viñedos Viña Mayor, Finca Caserío de Dueñas and Finca Anzil.

In April 2015, this winery from Ribera del Duero welcomed Almudena Alberca, who joined the Group as the Technical Director of Bodegas y Viñedos Viña Mayor in its three Denominations of Origin. With a consolidated experience, Almudena is currently in the ‘Master of Wine’ preparation programme and could become the first Hispanic woman in the world to hold a ‘Master of Wine’. With her international vision and since she joined, new management processes have been established in the three wineries of the brand, carrying out a renewal of the existing references of the brand, such as the new Premium creations of Bodegas Viña Mayor, among others, oriented towards the highest quality and the search for a differential style, more contemporary, and with special emphasis on the ‘terroir’.

History of the winery

The Viña Mayor winery was founded in 1986 in the so-called ‘golden mile’, next to the Valladolid-Soria road in the municipality of Quintanilla del Onésimo (Valladolid). The winery, with a built area of 4,500 m2, gathers it supplies from 470 hectares of vineyards, including its own and controlled vineyards, and has 8,000 French and American oak barrels. Therefore, the winery has 1.6 million litres of wine in its ageing warehouses. Given these figures, it is obvious that the winery is an example of exemplary facilities, where they have everything they need produce quality wines in all market segments. For all these reasons, the winery has earned its certificate Wineries for Climate Protection (WfCP), an initiative that the winery has been performing since 2011. Its aim is to preserve the wine habitats, traditions and cultures in the face of a phenomenon of fundamental importance for the vineyard: climate change. The winery, like all the others in the Group, also holds quality certifications ISO 9001, 22000 Food Safety and 14001 Environmental Management System.

The winery also has an interpretation centre designed and created by ACCIONA. This new exhibition concept offers the visitor a complete view of all the stages that take place in the winery through an innovative and enveloping scenography that uses several multimedia resources. The tour begins in the Vinification rooms, where the visitor has the chance to learn about the initial processing of the grape. From there, the visit gradually adopts a more sensory nature, which predisposes the visitor to understand the true miracle of the wine creation.

The imposing Ageing room with barrels is transformed into a warm space thanks to the effect of delicate lighting. A unique kaleidoscope-shaped audiovisual shows all the key factors for the production of quality wines. The Cork and Staves room is a small space with an enormous stage-effect conception. Here, the visitor is instructed on the importance of the nobility of these materials. The Calado de Secreto, the place where the best wine is aged, offers audiovisual elements that magically transform the entire space in the eyes of the visitor. All and all, an exemplary winery.

Work philosophy

At Viña Mayor tradition and innovation are combined down to the millimetre in the production of wines. Here, they are fully committed to the environment, with its protection and improvement in all aspects of the winery’s activity, from the vineyard to the winery and logistics. At Viña Mayor, they understand this responsibility and develop it in the management of their farms, the rational use of energy and water, and the initiatives included in standard ISO 14001. The winery is also committed to collaborating with the best winegrowers in the area through long-term contracts, which allows them to control the quality of the grapes from the vineyard and ensures an optimum degree of health and ripeness of the fruit. So far, one of the achievements of Viña Mayor has been the reduction of emissions by 19%, the verification of its carbon footprint, the improvement of sustainability in the value chain, and the improvement of water consumption protocols. Currently, 100% of the energy used at the winery comes from renewable sources. The winery also develops internal professional development programmes, promotes generational diversity policies and participates in climate change training programmes.
